General description
A novel variant in the KRT71 gene responsible for curly coat was identified in the breed Curly Coated Retrievers. The variant was also found in five other breeds including Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Lagotto Romagnolo, Spanish Water Dog, Bichon Frise and Irish Terrier at lower frequencies.

Detailed description
A novel variant in the KRT71 gene responsible for curly coat was identified in the breed Curly Coated Retrievers. The variant was also found in five other breeds including Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Lagotto Romagnolo, Spanish Water Dog, Bichon Frise and Irish Terrier at lower frequencies.\nOnly longhaired dogs can express a curly coat phenotype, while wavy hair is the appearance of curls in short coat.
