Dies wird durch sogenanntes pigment-type-switching verursacht, also die Umstellung zwischen den beiden Pigmenten (dunkles Eumelanin oder rotes Pheomelanin) w\u00e4hrend des Haarwachstums. Ein Tier kann beide Genvarianten (Allele) aufweisen, oder eine davon doppelt. Das Agouti-Allel (A) ist dominant gegen\u00fcber dem Non-Agouti-Allel (a). Tr\u00e4gt eine Katze das Agouti-Gen (Genotyp AA oder Aa), so weist ihr Fell eine Fellzeichnung auf.
