General description

Unlike most of the other known types of PRA, PRA in these two breeds is autosomal dominant. Bullmastiffs and English Mastiffs are affected by the late-onset form of PRA. The loss of vision occurs relatively late and thus often goes unnoticed at first.

Detailed description

Unlike most of the other known types of PRA, PRA in these two breeds is autosomal dominant. Therefore, there are no carriers. Dogs are either free or affected. Bullmastiffs and English Mastiffs are affected by the late-onset form of PRA. The loss of vision occurs relatively late and thus often goes unnoticed at first. As blindness is only recognised when the dog is already several years old, it is important to know before breeding whether or not the respective dog is affected.
