Genetic Test for Postoperative Bleeding Tendency in Scottish Deerhounds and Greyhounds

A variant of the SERPINF2 gene has been identified in the two breeds Scottish Deerhound and Greyhound, which is associated with a higher risk of developing delayed postoperative hemorrhage (DEPOH) in these breeds.

Clinical signs include unexpected, excessive bleeding or bruising that starts 1 to 4 days after a surgical procedure. Symptoms range from open bleeding from the wound to excessive and progressive bruising in the areas surrounding the wound and haemoabdomen. The results of the coagulation screening such as the measurement of the prothrombin time, the activated partial thromboplastin time and the von Willebrand factor antigen as well as the platelet count were unremarkable.
Compared to dogs that do not carry the marker variant, dogs with two variant alleles and dogs with one variant allele show an increased risk of developing DEPOH.
